Jeremiah Hackett, LCSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Direct, structured therapy for life abroad.

A familiar approach, far from home.

My typical client

Who do you work with?

I am a US-trained clinical social worker living abroad in Amsterdam. In addition to my practice working with men in the United States, I keep a portion of my practice available to expats and internationals. Living abroad isn't easy, and for those comfortable with US-based mental health care, it can be hard to find a practitioner with a familiar approach.

No two clients are the same. Some are wrestling with anxiety, low motivation, anger, or substance use. Others simply feel unmoored and want to think clearly about who they are and where their life is heading.

My approach

How do you work?

The biggest factor in whether therapy works isn't the therapist's method or their theory — it's whether the client likes and trusts their therapist. Decades of research keep landing there, and so does my experience.

I strive to earn that trust by offering:

Agency-Affirming Discourse

I try not to hand you answers. I ask more questions than make statements, and I try to push the conversation below the surface of actions & reactions into thoughts, feelings, values & beliefs.

Unconditional Confirmation

I don't flatter and I don't flinch. In counseling, you are free to be your unvarnished self. Therapy is one of the only places where you're required to try and be an authentic version of yourself.

Arousal Reversal Techniques

Each week, we review the tape. We zoom in on the moments anger or anxiety felt distracting and disruptive. We discuss proactive techniques to be less disrupted in the future.

I grew up in rural Maine in the 1980s, splitting my time between long bike rides, my books, and my Nintendo. Before becoming a social worker I was a high school English & history teacher. I graduated with my master's in social work in 2012 and have been in private practice for almost ten years.

In my spare time, I enjoy camping, gaming, riding bikes with my kids, and exploring our new corner of the world as a family.

The consultation

Could we be a good fit?

I don’t contract with a client without a consultation first. It’s free, takes thirty minutes, and is done using the same platform I use for all sessions. We’ll talk about what brings you in, what you’re hoping to get out of our conversations, and I’ll answer any questions this website does not address.
